China: The Data Centre Industry’s Deep Well of Growth and Prosperity
By Oliver Jones, CEO Chayora

There are two wonderful, ancient Chinese proverbs that aptly describe Chayora’s position in the data centre industry in China, which Technavio’s market research predicts will grow at a CAGR of approximately 13 percent over the next four years.

The first proverb is, “Dig the well before you are thirsty.” The second is, “If you want one year of prosperity, grow grain. If you want 10 years of prosperity, grow trees. If you want 100 years of prosperity, grow people.”

Allow me to explain the connection.

China, a country with a population of nearly 1.4 billion people, is a data centre market that is largely untapped by international operators and global hyperscale companies. As Chayora gets ready to participate in DCDConverged SE Asia, taking place 14-15 September 2016 in Singapore, we have some exciting news to share about our plans to launch our first data centre in Shanghai, a key market and global financial hub.

There are both opportunities and challenges surrounding new data centre builds and investments in China. And if you are interested in hearing more about the drivers underlying this global market from Chayora’s own perspective, I will be giving a presentation at DCDConverged SE Asia on Wednesday, 14 September at 15:50 in Hall 1 of the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

Chayora’s fully enabled, state-of-the-art, licensed facility in Shanghai will offer a range of options, including build-to-suit, assured scalability and wholesale colocation. The city of Shanghai, and all of China, is a market that is thirsty for new international-standard data centres to become a hub for multinational enterprises and colocation operators seeking to gain access to the nation’s vast and rapidly developing business opportunities. Chayora is digging a deep well to effectively serve this market, but we’re not stopping there.

Chayora also has plans to develop data centre campus locations in other key locations across China, including Tianjin, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. All Chayora data centre sites are fibre connected to world-class standards and ready for data centre construction and immediate connection to the domestic internet. These facilities also have fully-provisioned power from both grid and direct-feed renewable sources.

By investing in, and increasing the share of energy from renewable sources, Chayora will help reduce data centre green-house gas emissions, as well as create jobs that foster economic growth. Moreover, Chayora designs its highly efficient data centres to utilise the most efficient cooling and power systems, and implements the most efficient operational policies. In fact, it’s Chayora’s goal to set new standards in China for Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) in all of its data centres.

And as for the proverb concerning people and future prosperity?

As Chayora embarks on its ambitious plan to develop data centre sites across China, these facilities will create technology districts in major cities throughout a nation that is already the world’s largest online. Our vision is to be a leading developer of sustainable world-class data centre infrastructure in China, focused on delivering value to our customers by offering future-proof data centre solutions that enable their profitable growth.
